Not A Jedi Yet

George Lucas apparently woke up worried a few days ago that he hadn’t given people a reason to dislike him this month, so he decided to issue a Cease and Desist order to Matt Cooper, owner of internet advertising upstart ADDROID, which I just so happened to do the logo for.

The grounds? According to an article posted on Tech Crunch, Lucas owns the rights to the word “droid” and feels Matt’s treading on his pointed tail – even though he doesn’t own the 18th century word “Android” from which ADDROID derives its name. When Matt approached me and we discussed the project, there was zero talk of Star Wars, but there was specific mention of the word “android”.

George Lucas’ Dagobah-sized ego is well documented, but I really have to reiterate how shitty this is coming from a guy who blatantly ripped Akira Kurosawa’s The Hidden Fortress when writing the plot for the first Star Wars. To boot, he clearly just abbreviated an existing word, trademarked it, and has the temerity to call anything even resembling the letters “D-R-O-I-D” infringement.

George has become the evil he depicted in his fabled saga. Cruising the galaxy, choking-out anyone not paying him his (imagined) respects.
